Once ADSL is installed the line will be transmitting data on another frequency from the exchange, this frequency can be picked up by a telephone and cause hissing on the line. A microfilter filters the broadband frequency out and also gives you an extra port to plug your ADSL hardware into as it will not connect directly to your phone socket.

Any telephone socket in your house or business will need to have one of these filters on it and the placement is vital to the operation of the ADSL, see the diagram below for instructions on placing the filter correctly.

It is important to add a Micro Filter to all the telephone sockets that share the same line as the broadband that also have a telephone attached to them. If you use the telephone for an incoming call or if you are making a call through a socket that doesn't have a micro filter then the Internet connection can be interrupted.

If you have a socket that does not get used and has no telephone plugged into it then should not need a micro filter added to them.

NOTE
In order to be able to connect successfully make sure that your RJ11 cable is:

• · Connected directly from the modem to your phone line using a Broadband filter. It is not recommended to use a telephone extension cable as it is not designed to handle digital signals. If your computer is too far away from your phone socket you will need to purchase a RJ11 cable which is designed to transmit high quality digital Broadband signals. Longer RJ11 cables are available

CUSTOMER INSTALLATION MISTAKES
 If you use a telephone splitter to attach extra devices to the same socket as your Broadband modem make sure that the splitter is connected into the Broadband filter rather than into the socket without going through a filter.
